How are we different?
Comprehensive Assessment
Reading is made up of many different skills, including writing! Two children may both struggle with reading, but for completely different reasons.
Without a thorough assessment, instruction often becomes guesswork.
Our assessment provides a clear picture of your child's strengths, areas for growth, and the skills that should be targeted first to help them make meaningful progress.
We understand why your child is struggling
Every child learns differently. That's why every reading intervention program at Arise Reading Co. begins with a comprehensive reading assessment.
Our goal isn't simply to determine whether your child is below grade level. Our goal is to understand why they are struggling and identify the specific skills that need to be strengthened.
This allows us to create an individualized learning plan and place your child in the small group that best matches their current skill level.
Our Comprehensive Assessment Process
We use two research-based assessments that work together to provide a complete understanding of your child's reading development.
Reading Skills Assessment
Our reading skills assessment evaluates the skills children use every day when reading and spelling.
This includes:
-
Letter-sound knowledge
-
Phonics and decoding
-
Spelling (encoding)
-
High-frequency word recognition
-
Reading fluency
-
Sentence writing
-
Advanced phonics patterns and morphology (when appropriate)
This assessment tells us what reading skills your child has already mastered and what skills they are ready to learn next.
Phonological Awareness Assessment
Strong reading begins long before children read words on a page.
Phonological awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate the individual sounds in spoken words. Research has consistently shown that these skills are among the strongest predictors of reading success.
This assessment helps us determine whether an underlying weakness in phonological awareness may be contributing to your child's reading difficulties.
Rather than simply seeing that a child is struggling, we gain valuable insight into why they may be struggling.
Why we use both assessments
Many assessments can tell us that a student is behind.
Our assessment process helps us understand why.
By combining information from both assessments, we can identify whether your child needs support with:
-
Foundational phonological awareness
-
Phonics and decoding
-
Spelling and encoding
-
Reading fluency
-
Advanced word reading skills
-
Morphology and word analysis
This comprehensive approach allows us to develop targeted instruction that focuses on the skills that will have the greatest impact on your child's reading growth.
